De Bijenkorf

Natural materials and colors

Before they started thinking about their new building, this school first took a closer look at its vision on education. At ‘De Bijenkorf’ the principles of ‘TOM education’ - a customized form of education – where student needs are the guiding principles. Educational activities start in a group area and from here on students can get their work done at the 'learning square'.

'De Bijenkorf' provided areas reserved for individual learning and an auditorium which functions as a ‘learning square’. The school team was actively involved in the development of the plans. Colors and materials were selected together with the team and the architect at Vanerum Studio Houten.

The school is committed to nature and has therefore opted for natural materials and colors. The classrooms don’t have a traditional setup, instead they are flexible spaces with several workplaces for collaboration and individual work. A lounge bench in every classroom to work in small groups, group tables with stools, separate student desks with ergonomic chairs. Every student has his own drawer which fits under the table top and in the cabinets.

Bamboo is very present in the classrooms, in combination with warm white and fresh green colors, and the marmoleum floors, everything fits harmoniously together. The furniture of the staff room and principle office also translate the choosen interiorconcept perfectly.

A fresh and open school with a lot of natural light, a playful and nice environment for learning!
